Sea of Cortez Weather

Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea in general has been cloud free after the morning whispys cleared yesterday. Yesterday morning there was a big honk’n cell that developed just off of Puerto Vallarta and moved across the Sea and passed to the south of the cape late yesterday morning.

This morning there is some cloudiness south of the cape that is drifting NW and passing to the west of the cape so the skies should be clear in the cape region later this morning. The southern crossing also looks clear this morning.

Looking now over to Sonora where this time of year we can expect to see storms of various sizes build normally around the Los Mochas area and drift north toward the Fence. That was the case yesterday afternoon and part of one cell drifted out into the Sea around the Guaymas area. It looks to be breaking up now.

Several of the cells that kept moving toward the Fence they ended up in the NW corner of the state with a few crossing the Fence into the Tucson area. This morning it’s just a little cloudy along the Fence.
Looking now south along the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera where it’s thunderbumper city from Zihuatanejo south to well into Central America. The Tehuantepec is forecast to have light winds over the 3-day forecast period, however this morning the Gulf and the isthmus have numerous thunderbumpers working overhead that do not looks like they will be ending soon.

The ITCZ/Monsoon trough is very active this morning with lots of thumpers working along 10N.
There is a weak low embedded in the zone this morning that the National Hurricane Center is giving a 10% chance of any tropical development and that’s the only thing of any interest in our Tropical Kitchen this morning.

There are a couple of Tropical Waves out in the Atlantic this morning. One is out around 54W and the other a bit closer at 68W is passing over Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic this morning. It does not look like either of these will make it to the Eastern Pacific basin. We’ll see?

That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image where if you look carefully at this image you can see smoke rising from the Seattle area. This is nothing the fire department is worried about, it is day two of Seattle’s Hempfest where an estimated 85,000 pot smoking friends will celebrate in several of Seattle’s parks the legalization of pot in Washington State. There will be chance of a light shower this afternoon but otherwise the weather is perfect for a party on the grass (a little pun there)
OK I know I digress.

In northern California there is a low off the coast that will be bringing a good chance of showers to the inland valleys and foothills over the weekend.

In southern California high pressure aloft will remain in place through tomorrow with near normal temperatures at the coast and above normal temperatures inland. That low off the northern California coast will sink south early next week with a cooling trend and a deeper marine layer into midweek.
Looking now over to the southwest where earlier satellite imagery was showing some thunderbumpers sneaking across the Fence during the night. This morning this image is showing mostly whispys over the Tucson area.

There is an upper level ridge that will remain centered over the region through Monday when it will begin to weaken and shift slightly to the east. There is currently enough low and mid level moisture under the high to allow for isolated to scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderbumper to develop over the weekend. Low to moderate grade monsoon conditions are expected for the region for the upcoming workweek.

Well that is what is gong on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence with the exception of the northern crossing area which is looking at moderate northerlies or easterlies the rest of the Sea should be seeing light to moderate southerlies.

Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.

The northern Sea: light winds for the next 3 days. Today for the east, tomorrow SE and Monday NE.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: light SW today and tomorrow and NW on Monday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: the models are showing the points Chivato and Concepción Bay will be see light to moderate NE winds for the 3-day forecast period. This is a bit odd as the rest of the Sea will be see SE winds for the 3-day forecast period.

The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Light SE today and Sunday then light SW on Monday.

The East Cape: just light southerlies for the next 3 days.

The Mexican Riviera: Light to moderate SW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
