You may not notice any of the celebrities who have been making Rosarito Beach their new home, mostly during this last year. Rough estimates suggest they are pumping in a minimum of $75,000 each month to the economy. This is from their monthly rent, groceries, gas, utilities, and so forth. Since online poker was banned in the United States on April 15, 2011, a number of these professional players, who play online as their full-time employment, needed to find a location to move to that they could call their “new home.”They had several choices where they could locate. Some went to Canada, while others moved to Thailand.

Rosarito Beach has become the home of the largest group of poker playing ex-pats, according to professional online poker player Joshua “Jdawg91” Hoesel. He says, “I found out about Rosarito through a couple of friends of mine, and I decided I’d come down and see if I liked it, and I fell in love with the area immediately.” Most of the players agree this is due to its proximity to the border, the beautiful weather, and the savings in living expenses. Presently, there are more than 100 professional, online poker players living here. Within a year, it is predicted that there will be more than 200 players. Joshua says, “It seems like there are more players rolling into town all the time; it’s good to see!”
