Otay Mesa Border Crossing Pedestrian

Could Otay Mesa Bridge to Tijuana Airport Be Ready by 2014? - The binational airport project still has official hurdles, but planners hope it can open by the end of next year.

Work on the bridge linking stateside travelers to Tijuana International Airport is set to begin this year with hopes for the project to be completed next year.

Hurdles remain, however, include opposition from Tijuana's Mayor Carlos Bustamante, according to U-T San Diego. Officials with the company that operates Tijuana's airport, however, argue they have the necessary federal permits to go ahead with work on the Mexican side.

The necessary construction includes a terminal expansion in Tijuana and the addition of a bridge to the state's linked to a large facility on Otay Mesa.

Backers of the project include Sam Zell, the Chicago developer and investor who at one time owned the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Cubs.

San Diego Magazine estimates it's a 300-yard walk - about three football fields - between Otay Mesa and the Tijuana airport.
